Two hours after Woodstock firefighters were called for a gas leak, the explosion destroyed one home and damaged several buildings.

Multiple structures were damaged after a gas explosion ignited a fire in Woodstock Monday afternoon.

Firefighters were called for a gas leak about 12:30 p.m., Woodstock Fire and Rescue Fire Chief Brendan Parker told WGN News.

Around 2 p.m., the department posted on Facebook that some evacuations had taken place and warned people to avoid the area while utility and fire crews worked the scene.

“The explosion instantly leveled a home and ignited a fire in several adjacent structures,” Parker said of the 2:40 p.m. blast.

Officials told the television station that workers struck two-inch main shortly before the explosion.

Ten structures were damaged in the blast, which crews remained on scene for the rest of the day.

Twenty fire agencies from the region responded to handle the fire and survey the aftermath of the blast.
